The Sunshine Blogger Award

Thank you so much to the beautiful Sofii @ A Book. A Thought for nominating us for the Sunshine Blogger Award! Sofii is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, she posts such amazing content and she recently did a redesign of her blog which looks INCREDIBLE, so you should definitely swing by if you haven’t already!!

1. What was the last book you strongly disliked?

Nish: After by Anna Todd. I have a salty review in the works, so I will keep my lips sealed here (trust me, they don’t want to be.)

Ngoc: Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney. I tried so hard to like this book. Alas, it wasn’t for me. Salty review also pending.

2. How does your star rating system work for your reviews (if you use one)?

Ngoc: My rating system is as follows –

5 stars: I LOVE THIS BOOK MORE THAN MATCHA MILK TEA LATTES WITH RED BEAN AND PEARL LITE SUGAR HALF ICE AND WILL CONTINUE TO TALK ABOUT IT UNTIL THE END OF TIME

4 stars: As above, but potentially had a few minor issues that brought it just short of a perfect 5 star rating.

3 stars: Didn’t hate it, but will not be starting a shrine anytime soon

2 stars: Salty review pending

1 star: You better get some antihypertensives because by the time I’m done reviewing this book, your kidneys won’t know what hit them

Nish: I’m still in the process of developing mine. After finishing a book I have a rough idea of how much I liked it, but I’m figuring out my system beyond just a gut feeling.

equations

Nish: I definitely am reserving one star alone just for the ending – because I am SUPER picky with book endings.

3. What are your favourite pizza toppings?

Nish: Pepperoni is my all time fav. I would eat a whole pepperoni pizza by myself and have zero regrets about it.

pizza.gif

Ngoc: My motto is, any pizza is a good pizza. And yes, I am one of those monsters who likes pineapple on pizzas

4. Would you rather read a great plot with mediocre characters, or a boring plot with amazing characters?

Nish: I mean I’d prefer both to be great, but I would choose boring plot with amazing characters. Some contemporary YA novels do not have the most amazing plots, and the storylines can be predictable, but the characters make the read so worth it.

Ngoc: I’m all about the characters – if I don’t care about them, good luck trying to sell the plot to me, even if it’s about wizards eating pizza while dancing to Taylor Swift.

5. How many books are you currently reading, and which one is your favourite so far?

Ngoc: I mean technically two – Goblet of Fire (yes I have 400+ books on my TBR but I’m re-reading HP, DON’T PRETEND YOU’RE BETTER THAN ME, I KNOW YOU’VE ALL DONE ITand Again, But Better. I’ve also been ‘reading’ Our Dark Duet since April but not really because I lost interest about a week after starting it and haven’t had the heart to officially DNF it yet.

giphy-6.gifNo prizes for guessing which is my fave

Nish: Currently reading two books – Oblivion by Jennifer L Armentrout (the end of my reread of the Lux series) and Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare. I can’t pick a favourite because these two books fulfil such different needs for me (sorry not sorry).

sorry.gif

6. What was the last book review you posted?

Nish: My first one! It’s about this wonderful book called A Quiet Kind of Thunder, if you wanna check it out 😛

Ngoc: My review of Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor (spoiler alert: I loved it)

7. Do you prefer MG, YA, NA, or adult books?

Nish: I live and breathe YA. I personally find MG a bit too juvenile for my current liking, and will venture into the world of NA – I do have a few books I love that are NA – but I always return home, to YA.

Ngoc: It scares me to think that there’ll come a day when I won’t want to read YA anymore?

giphy-7.gifHow Ngoc feels reading YA as a 27-year-old

Nish: Honestly Ngoc and I will probably be 90 years old and when we run away from our nursing homes you can bet your last dollar we will be in the YA section of the closest bookstore.

8. Is there a popular author you’re NOT interested in reading anything by? (Elaborate if you’re comfortable doing so!)

Ngoc: George R. R. Martin – look, the GOT train came and left and I didn’t even bother lining up for a ticket. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nish: I’ve heard so, so many amazing things about Rick Riordan and the magical world he has created in his Percy Jackson series, but I just have no inclination to ever read his books. I’ll appreciate them from afar! To any Rick Riordan fans, I’m sorry (genuinely this time.)

sorry 2.gif

9. What marginalized rep would you most strongly like to see more of in books?

Ngoc: Oh gosh, it’s so hard to pick just one! I do want to see more representation of minority groups within minority groups. It’s great that we’re seeing more diverse books, but I’d love, for example, to have more books with an Asian main character who also suffers from a mental illness because honestly we’re not just one thing!

Nish: Asian. Representation. In. Mainstream. Fiction. Growing up, there were almost NO books that I read that I felt represented me as a person. Even something as major as Harry Potter only had Asian characters as the minor characters, and they were such stereotypical representations (I am sorry JK Rowling but the names! Cho Chang!! Cmon.) I love that this is starting to change, with books like TATBILB becoming more popular, and hope this trend continues!

10. Do you listen to music while reading?

Nish: NO. I don’t know how people do it, I wish I could put music on and tune everyone out in public places while I read but I just get distracted by the music! If I’m on a busy train, I just put my headphones in so no one will bother me but don’t actually play anything 😛.

Ngoc: Omg for some reason I always assumed you were one of those wizards who could do both? I don’t mind background noise while I’m reading, but I just can’t have music playing at the same time!

giphy-8.gif

11. Do you prefer book twitter or bookstagram?

Ngoc: Tbh, Twitter actually terrifies me. Things get blown up out of proportion in a nanosecond. I much prefer Bookstagram, which combines two of the things I love most in the world – books and photography 😍

Nish: Bookstagram. Why?

pretty.gif

Nish: All the pretty books ahhhhh. Plus I already spend so much of my time scrolling through instagram, it just makes sense. Ngoc also takes very, very pretty book photos and I recommend you all look at them.

  1. Congrats you two! Oooo! I’ve been curious about ‘Again, But Better’, so i can’t wait to read your thoughts. THAT HARRY POTTER GIF IS LIFE! Oh my gosh, I remember watching the film in theaters and being like, “uhhh … what happened to the CALM and COLLECTIVE Dumbledore?”

FRIENDS AND JOEY! I literally quote Friends on a daily basis …

I would like to try something by George R. R. Martin … but I don’t want to read a book with SO MANY POV’S! I don’t have the attention span for that.

Totally agree with Bookstagram … my love of life. I HAVE Twitter … but I RARELY use it. My Instagram posts automatically go up so I don’t have to do anything. Same with my blog posts ha-ha.

    Lovely answers, you two!

    1. Haha yes I’ve heard mixed things about it too! I’ve just started it & it’s cute but I’m not sure how I feel about it yet 😛 HAHAHA I KNOW RIGHT?! It’s actually the best book-to-movie mix up ever 😂

(Don’t hate me but I haven’t watched Friends although that’s not a surprise bc I’ve only ever finished 2 TV shows in my entire lifetime 😂)

OMG RIGHT?!? And honestly it’s like he kills characters off just for the fun of it & I get way too attached to fictional characters, I wouldn’t be able to handle that!

Oooh hahaha I should totally start scheduling everything, it would make life so much easier 😛

Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Jenna!! 😍

      1. Gossip Girl (DON’T JUDGE ME 😂) and Haunting of Hill House (although that only has 1 season so idk if it counts 😂) And I guess I’m almost up to date with 13 Reasons Why? I’m more of a movie person, I guess 😛

  2. Ahh congratulations on the award, you’re both sunshines in this community ❤ ❤ I loved reading your answers so much! I'm also all about the characters, a plot can be… ordinary, in a way, if the characters are fantastic I can fall in love with the story ❤ ❤

    1. Awwww Marie, you’re too good to us & your comments are always so kind 😭❤️ Thank you so much for reading!! YES YES YES!! Characters are honestly the make or break for us – if we don’t care about the characters, no plot is gonna get around that!

Hope you have a lovely week, Marie!

  3. I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE SALTY REVIEWS! YES PINEAPPLE ON PIZZA!!!! I’m not interested in reading the GOT books either. I bought the first book, but I realistically knew even then I would never read it 😂 and as someone who has read every Percy Jackson book and spin off series and companion book I will forgive you Nish 🤧 Totally feel you on the “how do you do fellow kids” situation 👵🏻. I’m one of those people who listens to music when I read 🙈 mostly because my brain can’t handle silence and that distracts me even more than the music does, haha. I totally get why most people can’t handle it though.

AND AHHH THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE NOMINATION 🥰 you’re both the sweetest and absolute rays of sunshine 💖

    1. *Rubs hands saltily* IT’S BEEN A HOT MINUTE SINCE I DID A SALTY REVIEW & I’M SO HYPED!! Hahaha maybe one day I’ll listen to them as audiobooks? I’m not keen on the size of them plus the fact that main characters get killed off quite a lot 😂

Ooooohhhh reckon both of us will have to rethink our choice not to pick up the Percy Jackson series (although in Ngoc’s defence – she actually *does* own the first book & intends to…eventually…read it 😂)

OMG YOU’RE DEFINITELY A WIZARD!! Both of us have always wanted to be the type of people who could do that 😭

Awwww you’re so welcome Lauren, we can’t wait to read your responses and honestly – RIGHT BACK AT YA, YOU FELLOW RAY OF WA SUNSHINE, YOU!

      1. I WILL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO THEM! right, like i struggle with fantasy at the best of times too. never alone at that proportion 😂

i’m such percy jackson trash i definitely encourage you to reconsider, but i also totally get they’re not for everyone! i feel like it’s hard to jump in on the series too because there’s so many books it’s overwhelming haha.

it’s one of my only talents 😎

        love you both 💛💛💛

      2. Yeah, we totally understand – it’s like recommending the Shadowhunter books to people. Even though we love them to bits, it’s SUCH a commitment 😂 But will definitely be reconsidering!!

THANKS SO MUCH LAUREN, WE LOVE YOU TOO!!! 💜💜💜

  4. guys, thank you so much for the nomination. ❤ both of you are literally the brightest rays of sunshine in the book blogging community, and i love how you structure and co-write your posts like conversations! (plus i absolutely adore your choice of gifs.)

please just publish your salty reviews already – i'm so stoked, i won't even care if my kidneys can't handle them 😂 and i completely agree with what you said about not being able to listen to music and read at the same time – every time i attempt to do that (just for aesthetic purposes, hahaha) it feels like my brain's getting overloaded.

    1. Awwww you’re so welcome, Chloe, thank you so much for supporting our blog & being such a great friend! 😍 Hahaha we spend WAYYYYY too much time on the GIFs – sometimes we’ll have finished drafting a post for days but not post it bc we haven’t peppered it with enough GIFs 😂

We have a uni break coming up so salty reviews will definitely be written, don’t you worry about that! 😛 Omg THANK GOODNESS it’s not just us then 😂

Can’t wait to read your responses to the tag!! 😍

Also, I cannot wait for this salty AF After review you keep hinting at – even if I am slightly obsessed with the series. [I'll try not to feel too attacked ahaha ;)]

And side note; PINEAPPLE ON PIZZA??? NOOOOO! 😂 😂 😂

HAHAHAHA this will be Nish’s first salty review & she’s so lovely I honestly don’t know if she has it in her 😂

      Hahahaha I know I know, it’s so polarising – I’m just a weird human, alright? 😂

Me? I’ll just happily stick to my margarita pizza like the picky little eater I am!

I AM SO READY – BRING ON THE SALTINESS. [Actually I can’t wait because Nish is so sweet so this will be interesting!]
