Taylor Swift Lover Book Tag (Original)

We love Taylor Swift. If that was not made clear or apparent before, let it be known now. And so, after our own private album viewing party (upon which we face-timed while listening to the new album and screaming) we figured what better way to demonstrate our undying love for Taylor than to create our very own Taylor Swift Lover Book Tag!

1. I Forgot That You Existed – A book that you want to forget you ever read

“It isn’t love, it isn’t hate, it’s just indifference”

Ngoc: Oh. Ohohoho. Would you like some antihypertensives before I begin? I think 29 Dates by Melissa de la Cruz is the only book I’ve ever given a 1-star rating to and honestly it would’ve been less had I not felt bad for the artist who designed the gorgeous cover.

Nish: If you have seen a previous post and know that I have read After by Anna Todd then you might be expecting that as an answer – but I don’t want to forget how angry After made me feel. I instead want to channel that into a salty review and forever scream about it. Instead I’ll pick The Selection series by Kiera Cass. Those books are so terrible and awful but so easy to binge read and I cannot wait to forget they existed.

2. Cruel Summer – A book you turn to when the going gets rough

“Killing me slow, out the window. Always waiting for you to be waiting below.”

Honestly – same, Jess. Same.

Ngoc: The Harry Potter books are the ultimate comfort reads for me, reading them always feels like coming home to my safe place.

Nish: Whenever I get stressed I always start re-reading (hence the re-reading rabbit hole I have fallen into right now.) I can’t tell you why, but the Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, particularly the earlier books, really have been doing it for me for the last few years. It’s nothing too complex at all, and I figure that sometimes a simple story, with a funny cute protagonist is just what you need.

3. Lover – Your book OTP

“Can I go where you go? Can we always be this close forever and ever?”

Nish: This is like picking a favourite child. My OTP is probably Will and Tessa from The Infernal Devices. They definitely have a love story worthy of their own Taylor Swift song (I bet Will would save all his dirtiest jokes for Tessa, and she would save him a seat at every table too and I’m not crying I swear).

Ngoc: ONE. YOU’RE ASKING ME TO PICK ONE. I do realise I wrote this question and have no-one to blame but myself. I feel like I can’t not say Lizzie x Mr. Darcy. They were my OG OTP’s and honestly I stan a slow burn romance 😍 (Also thanks Nish for putting that mental image of Will sharing dirty jokes with Tessa over dinner, my heart totally needs that right now.)

4. The Man – Your fave kick-ass female protagonist

“I’m so sick of running as fast as I can. Wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man.”

Ngoc: UM, AGAIN. WHY DID I PICK A QUESTION I COULDN’T POSSIBLY ANSWER?! THERE ARE SO MANY. Inej from Six of Crows. Maggie from Disruption. Katniss from The Hunger Games. Mara Dyer from The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. I co-wrote this tag so I’m allowed to break my own rules and pick more than one. Sue me. 

Nish: NGOC, ONE PERSON. Oml. Mine would probably also be Katniss actually! She’s one of the first characters I ever read that I was like, Yes! You go girl! You take on an entire government! She is dystopian goals.

5. The Archer – A book with good mental health representation

“All the king’s horses, all the king’s men couldn’t put me back together again. ‘Cause all of my enemies started out friends.”

Ngoc: Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett. The main character suffers from PTSD, although it isn’t the focus of the book – which is actually one of the reasons I think it’s so great. It shows that a person isn’t defined by their mental illness. I also think Jenn does an awesome job portraying how paralysing PTSD is and how helpless it can make someone feel.

Nish: Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson is one of my all time favourite books. It follows the story of a girl with anorexia and it is poignant, painful and beautiful. I re-read it at least yearly and cry everytime.

6. I Think He Knows – Your fave fictional crush

“I want you, bless my soul, and I ain’t gotta tell him, I think he knows”

Ngoc: Obviously my book husband, Jem Carstairs. Pretty sure even my actual boyfriend knows where he stands in relation to Jem 😛

Nish: Following in Ngoc’s footsteps as she runs towards Jem, mine is his best friend, Will Herondale. OMG NGOC CAN YOU IMAGINE A HOUSE WHERE YOU, ME, JEM AND WILL LIVE TOGETHER WHAT A DREAM.

7. Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince – Fave angsty romance

“It’s you and me, there’s nothing like this. Miss Americana and The Heartbreak Prince. We’re so sad, we paint the town blue. Voted most likely to run away with you.”

Ngoc and Nish: Say it with us now… the Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkins (as if you expected ANYTHING else.)

Ngoc: Honestly though, the angst in these books would give 90’s Avril Lavigne a run for her money

8. Paper Rings – Book with an ugly cover that you absolutely adored

“I love shiny things but I’d marry you with paper rings”

 

Nish: I LOVE the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. But I almost did not buy it because those covers. CRIKEY. Who. Designed. You. These books deserve MUCH better covers, and my current solution is that you get them in hardcover and throw the jacket away (or pull a me and hide them at the back of your bookshelf.)

Ngoc: I would give Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray a 10 out of 5 stars if I could, but the cover gets a -5 from me. Also may I just respectfully rant about the fact that there are currently three books in the series and there have also been three cover changes?! THAT’S ONE PER BOOK.

9. Cornelia Street – A book or series you never want(ed) to end

“I hope I never lose you, hope it never ends”

Ngoc: The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee. I just finished this book and I never wanted it to end. The banter and dynamic between the three main characters was just phenomenal and I’m so glad Felicity gets her own book (which I’m currently reading and you’ll be pleased to know her sass level continues to be off the charts.)

Nish: There are an infinite number of book worlds I wish never ended so that I could keep living in them. My current pick would have to be A Quiet Kind Of Thunder by Sara Bernard. It is a standalone but I wish I could get to see more of what the characters get up to!

10. Death By A Thousand Cuts – A book or series that deserved a better ending

“I can’t pretend it’s okay when it’s not, it’s death by a thousand cuts”

Nish: I was obsessed, OBSESSED, with the Divergent series (by Veronica Roth) in high school. And I got so mad at the ending of Allegiant I threw my book across my room. Tris. And. Four. Deserved. Better.

Ngoc: I was LITERALLY about to say Allegiant. We are the same human and you can’t convince me otherwise. I was so mad at the ending that I wrote an alternate one and posted it to Fanfiction.net 😂 Someone even said they’d tear out the real ending and stick my version in their book instead!

11. London Boy – Your fave British male protagonist

“They say home is where the heart is, but God, I love the English”

Nish: *Chanting* Noah Shaw. Noah Shaw. Noah Shaw.

Ngoc: I honestly think our friends could discover us worshipping a Noah Shaw cult and they wouldn’t even be surprised

12. Soon You’ll Get Better – A book that your heart will never recover from

“This won’t go back to normal, if it ever was. It’s been years of hoping…”

Nish: City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare. I cried my way through that book.

Ngoc: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. THAT ENDING. ALL THOSE DEATHS. MANY OF THEM UNNECESSARY. (In my humble and not-so-professional opinion.)

13. False God – A character you would leap into the burning pits of hell to save

“We were crazy to think, crazy to think that this could work. Remember how I said I’d die for you.”

Nish: Noah Shaw, not that he would need me to. But I would do it.

Ngoc: Jem Carstairs. Every time.

Would we express the same sentiments with actual people IRL? Probs not

14. You Need To Calm Down – A book with a powerful message

“Say it in the street, that’s a knock out. But you say it in a Tweet, that’s a cop-out.”

Ngoc: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – everyone needs to read this book. EVERYONE.

Nish: My choice is Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I can’t say I loved reading the book, but it was a powerful reminder about the impact that you can have on someone else, both small and large, and I think that makes it important.

15. Afterglow – A book you want to give a second chance

“Hey, it’s all me, in my head. I’m the one who burned us down. But it’s not what I meant. Sorry that I hurt you.”

Ngoc: The Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld. I really enjoyed the first book but then gave up on the rest of the series when I found out my OTP didn’t make it (teen Ngoc was a mood, honestly.) But I feel like I’m mature enough now to overlook that and give the series another shot 😂

Nish: I picked up Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Boys ages ago, and tried to get into it but just couldn’t at the time. And so it sat, collecting dust on my bookshelf. Since I know I used to like her other series, I am hoping if I give it another go soon it’ll stick.

16. ME! – Best character development

“I’m the only one of me. Baby, that’s the fun of me.”

Nish: Samantha Kingston from Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. I can’t say how without spoilers but I started off really not being her biggest fan and she grew on me so much.

Ngoc: Simon Lewis from the Shadowhunters series by Cassandra Clare. Simon is definitely one of my fave characters of all time and I think he has one of the best character arcs in the series (I mean, that boy literally goes through hell and back and still manages to keep his signature self-deprecating charm.)

17. It’s Nice To Have A Friend – Fave friends-to-lovers story

“School bells ring, walk me home…something gave you the nerve to touch my hand…Church bells ring, carry me home.”

Ngoc: Simon vs the Homo Sapiens by Becky Albertalli. THIS. BOOK. WAS. DIABETICALLY. CUTE.

Nish: Well, keep the Metformin handy because one of my favourite, ADORABLE book couples is from The Deal by Elle Kennedy. It includes friends-to-lovers AND fake-dating. What more does one need? (Nothing, that is literally all you need. I study medicine, I know this to be true.)

18. Daylight – If you could only read one book or series again and again, what would it be?

“I don’t wanna look at anything else now that I saw you. I don’t wanna think of anything else now that I thought of you.”

Ngoc: Pride and Prejudice, of course. I currently have 16 copies of it so it’s not like I’d even get bored 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nish: Can I say the Shadowhunter series and leave it vague so I get all the books? (Is that cheating? It is?)  SORRY I CAN’T HEAR YOU THE TAG IS ENDING *runs away with Cassandra Clare’s entire collection*
